Understanding mesothelioma

A tissue that is present in the lining of the lungs, stomach and other organs like heart is called mesothelium. Hence, the name of the tissue itself suggests that this kind of cancer involves the growth of the tumor of this certain tissue in the organs. The initiation of mesothelioma cancer is usually in the lungs. This tumor can also spread rapidly in the body and can also start from any other organ like abdomen. If not diagnosed early, mesothelioma can rapidly affect the whole body.

Although this type of cancer is very rare, it can prove to be really dangerous. The rare cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed commonly among the people who work in places where they tend to take in asbestos particles inside their lung during inhalation. A group of minerals with fibers which are long and thin are called asbestos particles and they can occur in the surrounding atmosphere. They can stick to the lungs. Being easy to inhale due to their small size, they can easily enter your lungs. The disease usually takes a long time to form, even when the organ has come into contact with these particles.

Signs and symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms can prove to be very painful. A person has difficulty in breathing, which is because of the fluid that forms between the chest wall and the lungs. Losing weight without any workout or diet is also a symptom of this cancer. Furthermore, harsh pain in different parts of the body or the swelling and formation of lumps in organs can be a sign of mesothelioma.

The similarities between lung cancer and mesothelioma make it difficult for it to be distinguished, but CT scans, biopsy and X-rays can prove to be a great help in informing the patient what actually is he going through. What makes this disease hard to be treated is that it is often diagnosed when it has advanced in the body. Even if it is found in a patient, there is no cure found for this disease yet which causes a feeling of despair in its patients. However, any disease which cannot be cured can be slowed down. Same is the case with mesothelioma. It is highly recommended for people to have regular checkups so that diseases of such kinds can be avoided.
